12 Reasons to Add a Crystal Singing Bowl to Your Birth Plan

The Crystal Singing Bowl is a sacred sound tool that comes from the ancient Tibetan singing bowls.  These bowls are usually used for meditation, bringing people into a relaxed state of mind.  They are now being used at home and hospital births by Soundbirth doulas and / or the birthing woman’s husband / partner.

Here are some of the benefits of choosing to use a crystal singing bowl at your birth.

  1. The sound of the crystal singing bowl moves you into the alpha brain wave almost immediately – so you can achieve a relaxed and alert state (in fact faster than using hypnosis)
  2. It gives you something to focus on during contractions.  You will actually be searching for the sound each time you start contracting so let your support person know they need to be watching and present with you or you may even get annoyed that the sound is not there or in time with you!
  3. It is more effective than listening to background music as the sound is being played especially FOR you and in time with your body / contractions. Also, LIVE music is always better than recorded music….we’ve all experienced this! Read the rest of this entry »

Clean, Cleanse and Charge!

When you play your crystal singing bowl for whatever reason, you want it to be “crystal clear” to give you the “crystal clear” sound and results you are looking for.

How can a bit of dirt or dust effect the sound vibrations?

Everything in the universe is in a state of vibration.  Sound is the vibrations we can actually hear (between 20Hz – 20 000Hz).  Everything we can’t hear ( a stone, a flower or a speck of dust) is still vibrating but out of our hearing range.  Think about when you walk into an old, desserted house full of spider webs and dust…imagine the vibrations coming out of there…”bad vibes”…then compare this to a house full of things that a person cares for, has personally chosen with love, appreciates and is clean and light!  ”Good vibes”.  You can’t hear the difference yet you can definately percieve it with your whole being.  This isn’t rocket science, it’s about being human.  Everyone can tell the difference between good and bad vibes!

Back to the dirty crystal bowl.  So, do you want “dust vibes” emanating from your bowl to your body, your house, your family?  Remember that when you play the bowl you amplify those vibrations creating more “dusty vibes”.  NO THANKS!  When you receive your bowl it would have been handled by people (more vibrations) and packaging material, so it is a good idea to give it a good clean, cleanse and charge before using it for healing, manifesting and labouring! Be “In Tune” with the Universal Orchestra!!!

I went for a walk in the fog and rain this morning and thought out loud about how EVERYTHING in the universe is VIBRATION.  I felt my whole body knowing that this is true and what this actually means.  I thought I would share my revelations with you as it is about sound and creating the life you want for yourself and your children.

I AM A MUSICAL INSTRUMENT

If everything in the universe is vibrating, WE are vibrating and are therefore instruments of sound. Like any musical instrument we can create high or low frequencies…not with a string and bow…but with our THOUGHTS, FEELINGS and ACTIONS.  These are the mechanics of our instruments just as the frets, strings and plectrum are the mechanics of creating sound on a guitar.  We therefore have the choice as to which frequency we would like to be resonating at.

Most of the time though we are unaware of this and therefore have no choice over the sounds we create.  Our instrument then sends out random notes, harsh notes, distorted notes, lazy notes, half-played notes which equals NOISE,  not music.   When we are aware that EVERYTHING we say, speak, think , do and feel has an effect on ourselves, those around us and the planet we can choose to play our instrument with intention and precision creating the most beautiful music you can possibly imagine! You have bought a beautiful crystal singing bowl. You play it, feel it’s vibrations, admire it’s aesthetics….now what?  What else can I do with this bowl you may be asking… Besides using it to support you during labour here are some other activities you can do with them on a daily basis…

1. Purify your Water

Clean your bowl. Pour drinking water inside the bowl.  Play the bowl thinking, or even better, saying out loud, “LOVE and GRATITUDE”. This will charge, purify and change the crystalline structure of the water. This link shows you how intention affects water as found by Masaru Emoto  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tAvzsjcBtx8.  This link http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oex8Cev-yJg&feature=related shows you what happens to the water when playing a Tibetan singing bowl.  The patterns on the water made by the vibrations are awesome! When you do this with your bowl, place your finger inside the bowl…it tickles!  The kids will love this! Read the rest of this entry »

How I ended up with a Crystal Singing Bowl

You may be wondering how I ended up with a crystal singing bowl in the room I was giving birth in.  Here is the story behind that…

From Interest to Passion

I have had an interest in music and sound therapy since I was 15 years old.  I discovered that it was a profession when I was  looking at what to do for work experience.  It suited me perfectly.  Music was something I was good at and I was interested in psychology and what made people “tick” as they say.  I was so excited as I knew this was the type of work I wanted to do in my lifetime.  My intention was to study music therapy at university when it came to Perth one day…it still isn’t here.  So in the meantime I finished my degree in music on the double bass, played in a few orchestras and then fell into the perfect job working as a music specialist in an adult day centre facility.  Here I gained experience seeing how music can transform people in an instant.  All I had to do to change the mood of the room was to play one of their favourite tunes and give them an instrument to play along with.  So simple, yet so powerful.

My Growing Collection of Instruments

Since then my interest has turned more into a passion.  I have been collecting mostly percussion instruments with the intention of using them one day to lift peoples spirits and reconnect them to themselves and each other.  You should have seen my bag FULL of instruments after my recent trip to Bali!  I just couldn’t help myself!  I use them now with groups of seniors, Mum’s and Babies groups and with my own children at home.

Sing to Connect During Pregnancy

Being pregnant is the perfect time to start creating a connection with your unborn child.  While you are pregnant, you are connected on a physical level through the umbilical cord.  After the birth, the cord is cut creating two separate physical bodies.

Sound is an invisible yet powerful tool which you can use to connect directly with your baby. This can start when your baby hears your voice while in utero and continue right up until s/he is in your loving arms – without ever experiencing a feeling of separation.  No one can cut the invisible sound cord that you create between you and your baby.

Your voice is the predominant sound your baby hears while they are in utero.  They also hear your heart beating, blood flowing through the placenta and your stomach gurgling.  According to sound researcher, Alfred Tomatis,  your baby is aware of this “sonic world” four and a half months prior to birth.    The sounds they prefer, according to Joshua Leeds in his book The Power of Sound, are high-pitched  rather than low-pitched.  This makes sense as it is the high-pitch of their mothers’ voices that they are most familiar with while in utero. A Crystal Bowl Soundbirth

Soundbirth baby Kira learning the piano

My beautiful friend Nicole asked if I would be there for the birth of her third daughter Kira. She was planning a water birth at home.  I was thrilled to have been asked and couldn’t wait!

Nicole started labor late in the afternoon, she called to let me know her progress. At around 7 o’clock she asked me to come over. We all managed to sleep for an hour or so before labor started in earnest. Nic’s Mum was there, as well as Steve and the girls.  Nicole asked me to bring one of her crystal bowls into the birthing room, she knew exactly which one she wanted ’and needed.’

Nic’s Mum  played the bowl through the first few contractions.  When she left the room  at the next contraction, Nicole demanded that someone play the crystal bowl. I started playing slowly and softly as the next contraction came…I watched and listened to stay in tune with where Nic was at in her contraction.  As she peaked  I played fasterand louder.  As the contraction subsided so did I.
