Need Help Choosing a Bowl?
Purchasing a crystal singing bowl (or 7!) can be a daunting exercise for those who don’t know where to start! There are so many pitches and sizes to choose from and usually you have to buy online so you don’t have the opportunity to play them first.
This can be very overwhelming for someone who is new to sound healing or playing an instrument.
Thanks to my music background and 15 years of experience using these beautiful instruments I now specialise in assisting people with choosing a bowl or a set of bowls that suit their needs, future goals, preferences in pitch/harmonies and budget.
Steps to choosing your bowl the perfect bowl/s for you!

Questions to Ask Before Buying a Bowl!
Why Do You Want a Crystal Singing Bowl?
Do you intend to use your bowl/s for yourself at home or for others?
Do you want to facilitate sound healing journeys one day for individuals and/or groups?
Are you planning on having a “SoundBirth” or becoming a SoundBirth Practitioner? You’ll need a “SoundBirth Bowl!” See section below for more info.
Which Size?
The pitch/es you decide on will determine the size of your bowl to a certain degree. But basically the lower the pitch the larger the bowl and the higher the pitch the smaller the bowl. SoundBirth supplies bowls from 8 - 22 inches.
Here are some other things to consider:
Do you intend on transporting your bowls?
If so, how much room do you have in your car?
The large bowls are quite heavy … how is your strength, your back?
What is your budget? The larger bowls are of course more expensive.
It is important to choose the correct size for the pitch you are wanting as it determines the thickness of the bowl. You don’t want the bowl to be too thin or too thick … so please check with me before deciding.
What is Your Budget?
How much do you want to spend?
Do you want to buy more bowls to add to this one/these in the future? Let’s work out a plan …
Which Type of Bowl?
Most people just order the classic frosted crystal singing bowls. They are opaque and have a slightly rough surface on the outside.
There is the option of having a clear quartz crystal singing bowl which is smooth on the outside and doesn’t create any white noise (slightly scraping sound) sound as you move the striker around the outside. These bowls are a lot more expensive. (I’ve always used the frosted bowls and they work beautifully so don’t feel you need to spend more money to relax people! It’s more about how you play the bowl and harmonise them with other sounds.)
Practitioner Bowl (Bowl on a Handle). These clear crystal bowls on a handle are perfect for those wanting to move around with their bowl. You can walk around a group or individual and move it around in circles to create that binaural beat effect. They have a very clear sound and people love them. There is a bit of a knack to playing them however but it won’t take long to learn!
Which Colour?
Most people just choose the white frosted bowls … but if you would like a splash of colour, see image for some options!
All 99.99% pure quartz crystal.
Available in 432 Hz also.
Which Pitch?
Do you know which pitch you want?
Do you prefer the low, middle or high pitches?
Are you interested in the chakra bowls?
If you want more than one bowl do you want them to harmonise in a major (happy) sound or minor (melancholy) sound? Or do you want to be able have both harmonies?
Do you want binaural beats? (Creates a “Wah wah wah sound which entrains the brain into a slower brain-wave state)
Will you be using your voice (toning, humming, Ommming or singing) with your bowl?
Do you have any other pitched instruments that you want to harmonise with your bowl/s? (flute, didgeridoo, hand pan)
Which Mallet?
It’s not just about the bowl!
The quality of sound has A LOT to do with the mallet you choose to play it with.
There are a few options! And it is a good idea to have a few different mallets up your sleeve to create a contrast in sound.
White rubber ball mallets - recommended
These are the most popular and are perfect for all sizes and types of bowls. (Included in ANY bowl purchase)
Suede mallets
Easy to get a sound but create a bit of a scratchy sound with the frosted bowls. And harder sound when you strike the bowls. Not my favourite…but I sell them if you want them!
Silicone Mallets
These mallets are pretty awesome because they create less of a scratchy sound when playing the frosted bowls and there is no chance of accidentally scraping the edge as there is no wooden handle! Easy to create a sound too from the very beginning.
The SoundBirth Bowl
The SoundBirth Bowl is the bowl I recommend to expectant couples and birth professionals to use as a support tool during childbirth.
I first used a bowl during my third home birth and noticed how much easier it was to use my voice when I had a consistent tone to lean on. It helped me stay focused and “gave me permission” to vocalise through contractions with ease. Learn more HERE!
At an ideal pitch that is suitable for vocalising comfortably with during pregnancy and birth - not too high, not too low.
Comfortable volume - not too soft (so women feel supported when vocalising) and not too loud when played safely (training provided).
14-inch bowl (middle-size bowl) - not too heavy to transport.
Easy for beginners - anyone can play a crystal singing bowl! Learn in 10 mins!
Reliable tool for birth partners and doulas.
Ideal for anyone wanting to vocalise with a crystal singing bowl - yoga teachers when “Ommmmming’ with their students, people using vocal toning to assist with healing or managing stress.
432Hz or 440Hz?
Yes, all bowls are available in 432 Hz if this is what you’re drawn to!
Both 432 Hz and 440 Hz bowls are tuned to the same musical notes, but their reference pitch differs slightly - by about 8 cycles per second. This means that a bowl tuned to 432 Hz produces tones that are just a little lower in pitch than one tuned to 440 Hz.
440 Hz is the current international standard for tuning musical instruments. 432 Hz sits just below this and is has been suggested that they can help reduce anxiety and blood pressure, support relaxation, and heighten intuition.
However, if you’d like your bowl to be in tune with a standard instrument such as piano, or other sound healing tools that aren’t tuned to 432 Hz, it’s best to order the standard 440 Hz.
Ask me about this before choosing - I’m happy to help you find the best match for your needs.

A lot of people love the idea of a chakra set - and it has certainly been marketed very well - but from a musical and practical point of view, I don’t actually think it’s the best option for everyone.
Coming from a classical music background, I always prefer to help people choose a set of bowls (whether it’s 3, 5, or 7 bowls) that truly harmonise well together and suit their goals as a sound journey facilitator.
I also tend to recommend lower-pitched bowls, because most people find them far more grounding and relaxing than the higher notes that often appear in standard chakra sets.
That said, sound is personal.
If you genuinely love the chakra concept and feel connected to it, then absolutely go for it! But if your priority is creating beautiful, balanced, deeply soothing soundscapes, a customised set is usually a better choice. Book a 1:1 mentoring session with me to help you choose! -
Yes - when played gently.
Crystal singing bowls can be safely used during pregnancy as long as they are used with care and awareness. To be extra cautious, some people prefer to wait until after the first trimester.Important safety guidelines:
Never place the bowl directly on the body during pregnancy.
Keep the volume comfortable - around 50–65 dB is ideal. You can check this with any phone decibel app.
Play at a distance, keeping the bowl 30–60 cm away from the belly.
Avoid sudden or forceful striking. A slow, steady tone is more comfortable and effective.
Sound sensitivity can increase during pregnancy. If the sound ever feels too strong, simply lower the volume or increase the distance.
Many couples prefer when the birth partner plays the bowl so the mum can stay focused on breathing, vocalising, positioning and comfort.
Every pregnancy is different. The most important thing is to do what feels comfortable and supportive for you in the moment.

Yes. The SoundBirth Bowl can be used during labour as a simple, steady support tool. The bowl is played by the partner or another support person in time with contractions. This gives the birthing woman a clear tone to connect with, making it easier for her to use her voice without feeling self-conscious. It also gives her partner a supportive role to play!
Vocalisation during labour can help with:
releasing fear and tension
staying focused
releasing oxytocin
breathing more effectively therefore increasing oxygen
reducing the experience of pain
creating a “birth ritual”
The bowl doesn’t need to be loud -just a gentle, steady tone is enough to support her to vocalise with confidence.
-
Usually, yes - but it’s a good idea to check with your hospital or midwife first.
Most hospitals allow small items that support comfort and relaxation during labour, including crystal singing bowls, as long as they are used gently and don’t disturb others.A few things to keep in mind:
Check hospital policy in advance. Some maternity wards have specific guidelines around noise.
Use the bowl quietly. A soft, steady tone is usually fine.
Be mindful of shared spaces. In a private birthing room, it’s rarely an issue; in shared wards, you may need to keep the volume very low.
Partners should play the bowl. This keeps the birthing woman free to focus on breathing, movement and vocalisation.
Have a backup plan. If the bowl isn’t suitable on the day, vocal toning alone is still highly effective. Vocalise with her or play the SoundBirth bowl, didgeridoo or tambura MP3s instead. (included in SoundBirth session package).
Most couples who choose to bring a bowl find that staff are curious and supportive once they understand how it’s used. An information PDF for staff is included in the SoundBirth packages.

It’s very common for partners to feel unsure at first - especially if they’ve never played an instrument or a bowl before. The good news is that the SoundBirth Bowl is extremely easy to play, and most people feel confident after just a few minutes of practice.
A few things that help:
Keep it simple. The partner only needs to make a steady, gentle tone. There’s no rhythm or technique to master.
Practice once or twice before labour. Even a 5–10 minute session is enough to build confidence.
Use contractions as the guide. The partner plays at the beginning of each contraction and stops when the contraction fades.
Remember the purpose. The bowl isn’t about “getting it right” - it’s simply there to support the birthing woman’s focus, breath and vocalisation.
Partners often enjoy it. Many find it grounding and helpful for their own calm during labour.
If your partner is still unsure, they can also choose to support you with their voice instead, or alternate between the two.
Or if you have another support person such as your mother, sister, friend, doula you could bring them along to a SoundBirth session too.
Or hire a trained SoundBirth Practitioner.
-

Testimonials
“I just recently ordered my first crystal singing bowl and was blown away with the process! Nicole was a wealth of knowledge and helped tremendously in my decision making process. On top of that, the speed of delivery to my front door really made it an effortless experience. Highly recommend and will definitely be back to order more!”
“The Integrate Sound Now Course in July 2017 was well and truly worth attending. As one who uses only Tibetan Singing Bowls, I enrolled in the course to just pick up extra snippets of information about sound. With Nicole’s relaxed manner, the easy-to-read course notes and inspiring sounds, little did I know that I would order - a crystal singing bowl! Thanks Nicole, I’ve now received it. It is extremely powerful. Only one rotation round the rim and it fills the room with its enormous presence. Where to from here? I’ll keep tuning in and let you know.” ”
“I would like to inform that I just received the 2 crystal singing bowls in good condition and the right pitch. I’m going to pass your contact on to IHQ in Montreal, so, if, in the future, we need help with this type of instrument again, you are a point of contact for local support here in Australia. Thanks again for your help.”
“I purchased a set of bowls through Nicole and she was so helpful and supportive. I then joined her sound training and learnt lots of great tips and different ways of using my bowls. Thank you Nicole for all your advice, help and continued support!”
“I have enjoyed learning about the knowledge and different ways to play particular instruments. The musical knowledge Nicole provides is amazing as your guaranteed support on how to choose the right instruments in the direction you would like to take. Sound journeys seem to amaze me over and over again, in the way it shifts the energy and allows you to bring yourself back to self.”
