Private SoundBirth Sessions for Expectant Couples

Prepare for labour together with voice, breath and sound

Discover practical ways to use your voice, breathing, partner support and the gentle resonance of a crystal singing bowl during labour.

Private sessions are available in the comfort of your own home across Perth or at Nicole’s home in Leeming.

A Different Way to Prepare for Birth

Many women learn breathing techniques in preparation for labour, but voice is often the missing piece.

During labour, there may be a natural urge to sigh, hum, moan or make low sounds. Yet many women feel self-conscious about using their voices, particularly if they have never practised this before.

A private SoundBirth session gives you and your birth partner a relaxed and supportive space to explore vocal sound before labour begins.

Together, you will learn practical ways to use voice, breathing, partner support and a crystal singing bowl to help you feel calmer, more grounded and more connected throughout your birth experience.

No singing or musical experience is needed.

What You Will Explore Together

Find Your Birth Voice

Learn how to use your natural voice as a source of rhythm, focus and release during labour.

You will explore ways to:

  • Release tension during contractions

  • Find vocal sounds that feel comfortable and natural

  • Create rhythm with your voice and breath

  • Stay focused and present in your body

  • Move with the sensations of labour rather than resist them

  • Work gently through any shyness about making sound

This isn’t about singing, performing or making a “beautiful” sound. It is about becoming comfortable using your voice instinctively, regardless of who may be in the room during your birth.

Give Your Partner a Bowl

Your partner or chosen support person will learn how to support you using their presence, breathing, voice and a crystal singing bowl.

Together, you will explore how sound can become:

  • A steady point of focus

  • A cue to breathe and release tension

  • A reassuring presence within the birth space

  • A shared rhythm during contractions

  • A way to remain connected with one another

For many partners, this provides a practical and meaningful role, helping them feel calmer, more confident and more actively involved.

Experience the Crystal Singing Bowl

You and your partner will have the opportunity to experience and play a crystal singing bowl during your session.

Your partner will learn how to play the bowl gently and intuitively in response to you. You will also explore how its sound can work alongside your breathing and voice during labour.

A bowl will be provided for you to use during the session. If you would like to continue practising at home and use a bowl during labour, suitable SoundBirth bowls are available to purchase separately.

Create a Heart Song for Your Baby

You will be gently guided to create a simple, personal Heart Song that you can begin singing to your baby during pregnancy.

You don’t need to know how to compose music or sing. Your Heart Song may be just a few notes, a gentle hum or a simple phrase that feels natural to you.

It can become a personal ritual of connection during pregnancy and something you can continue sharing with your baby after birth.

Complete the Session with a Sound Journey

Your session concludes with a gentle 20-minute SoundBirth journey.

This is an opportunity for you and your partner to lie down, rest and experience the sounds of the voice and singing bowls without needing to do anything.

Allow your body to soften, your breathing to slow and your attention to settle.

This quiet time offers a moment of rest and connection while giving you both an experience of how sound can help create a calm, focused atmosphere.

What Couples Are Saying

FAQs

Do I need any singing or musical experience?

1

Not at all.

This isn’t about singing “well” - it’s about using your natural voice in a way that feels supportive and grounding in your body.

You’ll be gently guided, and there’s no pressure to perform in any way.

Does my partner need to attend?

2

Your partner or chosen support person is strongly encouraged to attend.

SoundBirth is something you practise together. Your support person will learn practical ways to breathe and vocalise alongside you, play the singing bowl and respond to what you need during labour.

If your partner cannot attend, please contact Nicole to discuss your circumstances.

What if I feel shy or self-conscious using my voice?

3

This is very common - and one of the reasons it can be helpful to explore your voice before labour.

Your session provides a safe and private environment where you can begin gradually, without judgement or pressure.

You are never expected to perform or make a particular sound. We will work together to discover what feels natural and supportive for you.

4

Can I still use SoundBirth if I’m having a hospital birth?

Yes.

The voice and breathing practices are simple and adaptable and can be used during a home birth, hospital birth or in a birth centre.

If you plan to take a crystal singing bowl into hospital, it is helpful to check with your birthplace beforehand and discuss your preferences with your care team.

5

When is the best time in pregnancy to attend?

Any time from around 20 weeks onward is ideal.

This gives you and your partner time to become familiar with the practices and use them together before labour begins.

You are also welcome to enquire later in pregnancy.

Will SoundBirth help with pain during labour?

6

Every labour is different, and SoundBirth cannot promise a particular birth experience or level of pain relief.

Many women find that breathing, vocal sound and having a steady point of focus help them release tension, remain present and work with intense sensations during contractions.

SoundBirth complements rather than replaces antenatal education, medical advice or any pain-relief choices you may make.

Do we learn how to use the bowl ourselves?

7

Yes.

Your partner or chosen support person will learn how to play the bowl gently and confidently during the session.

You can use one of Nicole’s bowls while learning. If you would like to continue practising at home and use a bowl during labour, you will have the option to purchase a suitable SoundBirth bowl.

Do we need to have a particular kind of birth planned?

8

No.

SoundBirth is not connected to one particular kind of birth. The practices can be adapted to suit different birth settings, circumstances and personal preferences.

The aim is not to create a “perfect” birth. It is to give you and your support person practical tools you can draw upon wherever and however your birth unfolds.
