What is SoundBirth?

SoundBirth is a gentle, practical approach to birth preparation using voice, breathing and the supportive sound of a crystal singing bowl.

It helps women and their birth partners explore simple ways to feel calmer, more grounded and more connected as they prepare for birth - and during labour itself.

Finding Your Voice for Birth

Many women learn breathing techniques in preparation for labour, but voice is often the missing piece.

During labour, there may be a natural urge to sigh, hum, moan or make low sounds. Yet many women feel self-conscious about using their voices, particularly if they have never practised this before.

SoundBirth provides a safe and supportive opportunity to explore vocal sound before labour begins. This isn’t about singing, performing or making a “beautiful” sound. It is about discovering how your own voice can become a natural source of rhythm, focus and release.

Voice, Breath and the Crystal Singing Bowl

Through simple vocal practices, conscious breathing and the gentle resonance of a crystal singing bowl, SoundBirth may help you:

  • Create rhythm and focus during contractions

  • Release tension and encourage relaxation

  • Feel calmer and more grounded

  • Stay connected with your body and breath

  • Move with the sensations of labour rather than resist them

  • Create a reassuring atmosphere within your birth space

The techniques are simple, intuitive and adaptable. They can be used during a home birth, in hospital or in a birth centre.

Supporting Birth Partners

SoundBirth also gives birth partners a meaningful and practical role.

Your partner can learn how to breathe and vocalise with you, play the crystal singing bowl and use sound in response to what you need.

Practising together before birth can help your partner feel more confident and help you develop a shared rhythm and sense of connection that you can return to during labour.

The SoundBirth Story

SoundBirth began during the home birth of my third baby.

As my contractions became more intense, I could feel the urge to make sound - but I held it back. I felt self-conscious, even though I was surrounded by people I trusted.

At one point, my mum began gently playing a crystal singing bowl in the room.

As soon as I heard it, something shifted.

Without thinking, I began to use my voice. Almost immediately, I felt calmer, more focused and more able to move with each contraction.

The sound gave me something to connect to. Something to follow.

From that moment, the bowl and my voice became a central part of my birth experience.

That simple but powerful shift eventually became SoundBirth - a way of helping women discover and use their voices for birth in a way that feels natural, supported and deeply connected.

I created SoundBirth in 2011 and have since shared the approach with expectant parents, doulas, birth workers and sound practitioners.
